CocoaPods 1.8.5 CDN Response 400: A Historical Specs Fallback
Content edited . This editorial update does not represent a new runtime test.
On this page
A CocoaPods CDN Response 400 needs diagnosis at the specification-source layer. Record the failing URL and CocoaPods version before changing dependencies. The original case used CocoaPods 1.8.5 and worked around a source download failure by using the Git Specs repository.

Identify the failed source
The historical error included:
[!] CDN: trunk URL couldn't be downloaded:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/CocoaPods/Specs/master/Specs/ Response: 400
Capture the complete output from pod install --verbose in your own project. Check pod --version and the source declarations in the Podfile. DNS, proxies, repository availability and obsolete tooling can produce different failures; this message is not proof of a broken pod package.
Preserve the dependency state
Keep Podfile and Podfile.lock under version control. Prefer pod install when you want the existing locked dependencies. pod update can intentionally change resolved versions and should not be a reflexive troubleshooting step.
Understand the historical fallback
The old note added this at the global level of the Podfile:
source 'https://github.com/CocoaPods/Specs.git'
It is a Git-backed specification source, not an extra library dependency. The official source syntax explains source order and the implicit public source. A Git repository may take more time and disk space than the CDN. Do not mix sources blindly or remove a private source your project needs.
Verify the outcome
Rerun the intended install, check the failing URL no longer appears, and review the lockfile diff before accepting dependency changes. Open the generated workspace and build your target. The old 1.8.5 failure was not reproduced during this revision.
